A message from a very special guest columnist

Be careful not to parade your religion before others; if you do, no reward awaits you with your Father in heaven. When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; they love to say their prayers standing up in synagogues and at street corners for everyone to see them. Truly I tell you: they have their reward already. But when you pray, go into a room by yourself, shut the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in…

Dee Dee is dead, Chom mourns

we drink and we drink

This is our constant task, for as long as the universe exists in the electrics of our brains: to redeem each moment or let it fall. - Chris Floyd, Moscow Times It’s the last day of school! Am I fucking glad! I didn’t know the spirit of the forest made the grass grow!…

You’re so vicious!

The haughty and lovely Latvian Alina Lebedeva is my new hero. While Prince Charles was in the Latvian capital of Riga working a crowd of children, our friend Alina reached out and whacked him in the face with a flower. As police dragged her away, she proclaimed, “I’m protesting against Latvia joining Nato and I’m against the war in Afghanistan - Britain is the enemy.” Britpop is on Alina’s side, though; at the MTV Europe awards, Damon Albarn showed up in a CND t-shirt, telling viewers, “You have a…

Re-release of the first Wake LP, other rambles

So I was poking around looking for information about Les Temps Modernes, the label that is doing all the Section 25 re-releases I have recently been buying. As you can see I hit the jackpot, because when I started my search I didn’t even know what LTM stood for. Anyway, it turns out they’re re-releasing The Wake’s first album with all kinds of extra tracks and Peel sessions. Lovely. It seems like just about every band on Sarah Records named The Wake as one of their major influences. So…

School Leavers

“I once read somewhere that Sean Connery left school at age 13 and later went on to read Proust and Finnegan’s Wake and I keep expecting to meet an enthusiastic school leaver on the train, the type of person who only ever reads something because it is marvellous (and so hated school). Unfortunately the enthusiastic school leavers are all minding their own business.” From The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitt. I feel like this almost every day, although maybe not always in reference school leavers… What about you?…

Random

School has begun again in the magical land of Chom and hazel still doesn’t have a job and thus no internet access, so we won’t be updating at our usual relentless pace. Rumor has it that Doug and Kate have the ability to post on this site; maybe they will save us. Yesterday I learned that “Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo” is a grammatically correct English sentence. At about $600 a class and about 43 class days a semester at UT, I figure that my professor…
